Ecosystems
THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT | CLIMATE & ENERGY | OCEANS & WATER | POLICY, ECONOMICS, & LAW
With the advent of climate change, the goal of our ecosystems studies list—to publish the best science for the preservation of global biodiversity—has never been more relevant. Scientists know that ecosystems with healthy ecological functioning are more likely to adapt to the unpredictable pressures of a warming climate than those already struggling with extinction, invasive species, and fragmented landscapes. But how can we support healthy landscape functioning and, if necessary, restore rich biodiversity?
For nearly three decades, Island Press books have offered the latest tools and analysis in response to this question. We have pioneered the literature in two areas—ecologically effective large-scale connectivity and ecological restoration—that are revolutionizing the way we understand nature. For example, Trophic Cascades, edited by John Terborgh and James A. Estes, presents game-changing research on the importance of top predators for healthy ecosystems. And our series on restoration ecology now includes twenty-six books by the leading practitioners and professionals in this exciting and promising field.
