The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration Books

About the Series

SER SERIES BOOKS

The Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) and Island Press (IP) are pleased to announce a book series, "The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration." As the title suggests, our aim is to create a forum devoted to advancing restoration science and practice, as well as promoting their integration with the conservation sciences.

Restoration is emerging as a keystone strategy for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem protection and management, and sustainable development of natural capital. Once applied to a limited domain of damaged sites, restoration is now a basic element of management in national parks and protected areas worldwide. Moreover, in rich and poor countries alike, restoration is increasingly being attempted at all levels, from local, community-based projects to strategies for global sustainability.

In coming decades, restoration as both tool and philosophy will continue to gain importance. The purpose of this series is to provide the practical knowledge and scientific insight that will allow restoration to become the powerful healing tool and integrative science that the world so clearly needs.

IP and SER bring a shared sense of mission and an interdisciplinary approach to this collaboration. A non-profit publisher, IP has been publishing books on environmental science and policy, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary work, including ecological restoration, for more than thirty years.

The SER, an non-profit organization, has a history of bringing together land and resource managers, ecosystem designers and engineers, social scientists, and biologists. Indeed, one of SER's fundamental objectives is to serve as an evolving, ongoing forum for exchange of experimental results, observations, personal experiences, and hard-earned philosophical perspectives.

SER and IP recognize that restoration is both a global need and a global endeavor, and we hope that the series will aid in this vital process at the widest possible scale. Faithful to the traditions of both partners, we shall address terrestrial, insular, and aquatic ecosystems, at all levels of biology from population and organismal biology to ecosystem studies, and at all spatial scales from the pond to the landscape, watershed, and bioregion.

We welcome works from the social sciences as well as the natural and physical sciences, and eagerly seek exceptional contributions from individual authors in addition to well-written co-authored volumes and edited collections of papers. Authoritative studies of the scientific principles underlying the field of restoration, as well as more applied treatments of restoration practice, are included in the series publications.

Series editors for SER are James Aronson (CNRS, France) and Karen Holl (University of California, Santa Cruz).  Barbara Dean, executive editor of IP, manages publication of the series. In addition, SER has assembled a distinguished and international editorial advisory board to assist in series development and proposal reviews: Don Falk (University of Arizona); Margaret Palmer, University of Maryland), and Richard Hobbs (The University of Western Australia).

The Publication Process

To each work in the series, the SER editors lend their expertise in the development of the field of restoration science, practice, and policy, while the IP staff oversee manuscript development, packaging, and promotion. Authors sign standard publication contracts with IP, and books receive the personal, high-quality attention that is the hallmark of IP publications.

Each proposal is peer reviewed by independent readers familiar with the field to be covered. The SER editors provide editorial oversight at three points: a synthesis review during the consideration process, developmental guidance as the manuscript comes together, and a final editorial review prior to production. The covers and interiors of books in the series feature uniform design elements so that they can be readily recognized as part of the series, but each book is designed individually to reflect its unique content and audience.

In addition to the full-service, targeted marketing and distribution efforts of IP, books are also promoted by SER to its membership. All books in the series benefit from the affiliation not only with other books in the series, but also with other innovative books on the broad range of environmental topics from IP.

The Submissions Process

The editors and IP welcome submission of proposals for books to be part of this series. Prospective authors should use the instructions to submit a prospectus.
